God, I just want to bitch today – BEDA Day 22
Feel free to skip over this post, as it’s really just me bitching and complaining about my parents. But today, it’s really all that I have the concentration to post, sorry.
I am just incredibly pissed off right now. I know my parents claim to be looking out for me when they say Art History isn’t a good major, but I really don’t care. All my professors keep telling us that we should major in something that interests us and for me that’s Art History. But nooooo, my parents told me that I either have to major in International Studies or I have to switch schools. That or prove to them that Art History majors from my college have a high job placement, and I don’t really know how to do that. I guess I can talk to an Art History professor, but I don’t know…
Honestly, I want to be a librarian when I “grow up” and I really don’t see how being an Art History major for my undergraduate work would matter in that case, since I’d still have to do graduate work anyway.

Y’know what all students with these parents should have? A scholarship/loan/work-study program thing to back them up specifically when said “parents” decide what you want isn’t good enough for them. Seriously, wtf. They’re suppose to be supportive, not shove you into their ideals. Lousy parents (no offense). >:/
No offense taken; I completely agree. Unfortunately in order for me to get any sort of good scholarships, I’d have to be an independent student, and since I still live at home technically (when I’m not in my dorm), am still on their insurance, and a few other things that can’t happen. And my dad makes way too much for fucking FAFSA to give us any money, even though we certainly could use the help. D:<
That sucks.
People shouldn’t go into a university program, just because they can get a better job; they should do something were they can learn something that interests them. -__-
I always feel like tearing at my hair when I read stories like this. My parents are completely understanding of the stuff I want to do (or rather it’s more like they say, “go to school for writing” while I’m like, “no! That’s not reliable enough for a career!”), but I know what parents can be like in other situations. Ugh. They’re the parent so they’re automatically right and then they lay a guilt-trip on you if you try to argue. And of course, if they’re still supporting you that makes it even tougher.
Anyway, all I can wish you is some good luck. Unfortunately I don’t know any jobs that would be helpful. Though to me it seems like majoring in Art History would actually be useful for a librarian. Everyone who works at libraries I’ve been to seem to have some area they studied outside of just…books.

It’s nice to have people who don’t know me in “real life” tell me the same things that I’m hearing from people that know me (other than my parents, obviously), since it makes me think that my point is even more valid.
Curse the ever-delicate (and in some cases, contradictory) balance between choosing a career you will enjoy and a career that will work for you. Yea…I know exactly what you mean. Though I’m one of the lucky ones whose career path is NOW compliant with my parents’ expectations, I can imagine all the crap you had to go through. At one point of time, I did remember my mom talking me up initially then waging World War 3 with me to take nursing, all for the notion that nurses always have a job because people always get sick. She was right of course, but then again, so were teachers. I brought this up and it seemed to shut her up for good regarding this matter.
I was going to recommend getting self-funded (like scholarships and such) for your tuition so that parents won’t have a say on whatever career path you choose. But seeing how your parents support you, puts you in an even tighter situation. The only other thing I can think of is to keep expanding your interest so that you can have something both profitable and enjoyable. Other than that, I wish you the best of luck.
And yea..fucking FAFSA sucks. I get absolutely $0 from it, yet I have to go through the tedious process of filling it out. -_-
I really don’t see what they think is useless about an Art History degree…everything I’ve looked up about them says they’re useful for going in to Library Science.

One of my dad’s arguments today was that if he loses his job (he’s old and his work is laying like 90 people off), then he wouldn’t pay for my school. To which I replied, then it wouldn’t matter, since I wouldn’t have a degree anyway. He didn’t see to get that. :/
