Black Bird volume 1

blackbird1Black Bird volume 1
by: Kanoko Sakurakoji
published by: Viz Media [Shojo Beat imprint]
story: There is a world of myth and magic that intersects ours, and only a special few can see it. Misao Harada is one such person, and she wants nothing to do with magical realms. She just wants to have a normal high school life and maybe get a boyfriend. All that changes when Misao is attacked by a demon. Her childhood friend Kyo suddenly returns to save her and tend to her cuts–with his tongue! It turns out Misao is the bride of prophecy, whose blood gives power to the demon clan who claims her. But most demons want to keep her power for themselves–by eating her! Now Misao is just trying to stay alive…and decide if she likes it when Kyo licks her wounds. (from the back cover)

Ramblings: Oh gosh were there moments where I felt dirty reading this, but holy crap if I didn’t love it.
I liked Sakurakoji’s previous Shojo Beat title, Backstage Prince at least somewhat, and I absolutely love her art (it’s just so clean and pretty) that I decided to give Black Bird a try, despite having heard that it was rather smutty. And smutty it is, not in like a pure porn way (it’s only rated T+, not even M), but it sure gets rather close (there are definitely boobs on one page). Such a stark contrast to St. Dragon Girl that I just reviewed the other day, isn’t it? haha.
I honestly wasn’t really expecting too much from a series based around a girl getting wounded and then having her wounds licked by her (attractive) childhood friend who of course happens to be a demon, but I’m pretty much in love with it right now. I’m not sure that I can explain exactly why I like it (like I said, I felt kind of dirty at times), but I’m definitely going to be following this series from now on.

tl;dr: I don’t know about how Misao feels, but I sure like it when Kyo licks her wounds. ;]

I wasn’t that fond of this (mainly because the girl annoyed me a lot), but liked the art well enough. It reminds me of Love Monster for some reason (which needs its own release)

I can completely understand, lol. I’m really not sure what it is that makes me like it. xD

ha ha! I so know what you mean about this title. I think it will only get better from this point. If this series was so “smutty/trashy” as to be offensive, I don’t think it would have won the Shogakukan Manga Award. It will be interesting to see how long Sakurakoji can keep the sexual tension going before it gets old, or frustrating. For now, it’s my favorite guilty pleasure. :]

Yeah, I figure there must be a reason a series that seems so smutty got such a nice award, so I’m going to stick around to find out. xD
