Black Bird Volume 3

March 18, 2010

Holy crap, I’ve been rather negligent, haven’t I? Sorry about that, guys!! I was just in one of those moods where I couldn’t bring myself to do anything really, let alone blog/review books (there were a few times when I was so bored that I didn’t even want to do anything, I just went to bed instead). I have quite a few reviews that I’m working on now though, so I should be a little more alive in the future. :] I’m thinking about doing Blog Every Day April again, but I’m not sure how well that will work out…we’ll see how things go, ok? :]

Black Bird volume 3
by:
Kanoko Sakuraokji
published by: Viz Media [Shojo Beat imprint]
from the publisher:
Misao is starting to trust her heart where Kyo is involved, especially after he gives her one of his primary feathers. It isn’t just her first present from him, it’s a magic talisman that will keep her safe when he’s not nearby! Misao is elated to be able to go to school without the fear of being eaten, just like a normal teenage girl. But as her feelings for Kyo deepen, she starts to realize that as his bride she will have to leave her human life behind–including her family!
my ramblings:
On the third page of the actual story, we get a shirtless Kyo, if that’s any indication of what this story is about. Don’t go into this story expecting a glorious work of fiction, but you will be entertained (it didn’t win the Shogakukan Manga Award for shojo in 2009 for nothing).
This volume deals with Misao trying to get more information about what will happen to her if (really when, because it’s basically a given) she does become Kyo’s bride. Apparently it’s not going to be good, based on what the records of another clan say. The volume leaves off with Kyo and Misao about to do the nasty (it’s not really a spoiler since the whole thing is basically about foreplay…), but I’m pretty sure some one is going to interrupt them before they actually get to it.
On the characters, I still don’t really feel either way towards Misao, but I really like Kyo. I know a lot of reviewers think that he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing, but I really don’t think that he is; especially with his line in this volume, “It’s ironic…to think that I, who was supposed to protect you from everyone else…will be the one to hurt you the most…” That doesn’t strike me as a bad guy. He knows that he’ll hurt Misao and is doing everything in his power to stop that from happening (hence looking in to the Senka Roku and trying to find out what will happen to stop it). I suppose I could see how you could take that to be bad (he knows he’s going to hurt her, but is still pursuing her), but I think it’s really more of the fact that Misao accepted him and knows that she’ll be hurt and doesn’t care. But enough on that and on to a more lighthearted discussion.
I feel kind of silly for just noticing this, but I love, love, love the cover designs. I think Viz did a great job matching the original version well (actually improving on, with the feather part of the title art), but I also love what Sakurakoji has done to make the covers all match. Each cover has a different color scheme (in this case green obviously), and the flowers, the number of the volume, the title art, Kyo’s eyes, and Misao’s obi all match it. I got the flowers pretty quickly, but Kyo’s eyes were the last thing I noticed and it made me happy, because it’s such a tiny thing but it really makes the cover (in my opinion of course).
The editing was spot on as usual, no problems at all to be found. I especially like the fonts chosen; there was a good variety for the different uses of speech bubbles/squares of text.
I just can’t help but be enthralled by this story, no matter how smutty it gets. Oh, and where is my anime for this series? Seriously, I’m amazed it doesn’t have one yet.

Ah, you shouldn’t worry about it. Especially since this is the busy season for unistudents. ^__^

I’m not big on Black Bird, though I can understand why people enjoy it. Also, the art is really pretty.

Well…sort of, haha. I have a weird schedule, so I had my “winter break” 2 weeks ago and the week before that I had a bunch of midterms…so I haven’t really had any sort of excuse since then. xD

And I can definitely see why people wouldn’t like it. But homagosh, yes, I love the art. :D

        ^___^

Oh also if you do BLOG-EVERY-DAY-IN-APRIL again I’ll try it too.

I’m pretty sure I’ll at least try. I actually did it last year and it was a really good motivator (obviously, haha), so I think I’ll do it again. :]

Did you have time to check your mail?

Good to see you back :D
Man, each time I see a review for Black Bird I keep kicking myself for not getting the volumes yet. It’s definitely part of my favorite romance genre: supernatural/paranormal/fantasy-like/not like in RL haha.
Plus, shirtless = increased piqued interest as well XD
Looking forward to what other reviews you have in store, especially light novel wise :3

hahaha, I like to disappear every so often. xD But thanks!

The shirtless bit was definitely a plus. :3 Some people have a serious thing against this series, but as you can probably tell, I really like it. (I do that a lot actually…maybe I just don’t like to delve too deep into possible meaning in my manga?)

Definitely have Battle Royale and Spice and Wolf coming up! :D And then Usurper of the Sun (well…once I finish it…I’ve barely started actually, haha.)
