Manga License Wish List

March 25, 2010

I know I promised reviews, but I had the urge to do this list instead, sorry all. :] I’m definitely going to try and do BEDA again this year though, so you’ll see me every day starting next Thursday~ (I’m kind holding some reviews out for then, haha.)

I know this has probably been done to death, but I’m zoning out in my Astronomy lecture and I love lists and figured I’d start a list of my own for series that I’d love to see licensed here in the States. It’s all shojo series (because that’s most of what I read and basically all the shonen series I read are already licensed), and mostly series from Ribon and Margaret. If you follow my blog at all you probably won’t be too surprised by the choices. A few of them will probably surprise you though. ;] ENJOY

MOMO by: Mayu Sakai
Why? I have the first volume in Japanese and the art is sooo gorgeous and the story seems equally as intriguing. Plus it’s in Ribon, so Viz could get it for their Shojo Beat line. ;]

Rockin’ Heaven by: Mayu Sakai
Why? I honestly don’t know a lot about this series, but if MOMO is any indication, it should be good and I’d love to see at least one of Mayu Sakai’s work licensed.

Mistress Fortune by: Arina Tanemura
Why?
Because I love it. :] Seriously, it’s fun and quirky and is so obviously a big joke from Arinacchi that I don’t understand how people don’t like it. And again, Ribon=Shojo Beat.

Sakura Hime Kaden by: Arina Tanemura
Why?
Even if it’s not top Arina (though I don’t actually have any problems with it, I can see how most people do), it’s Arina and I want it in English.

Stardust Wink by: Nana Haruta
Why?
Because how could you not love Nana Haruta’s art?!? Plus the first few chapters at least are lots of fun and I can’t decide who I want Anna to end up with, so I’d love to be able to buy it and read it in English. And there’s a super cute squirrel!!

Love-Berrish! by: Nana Haruta
Why?
I haven’t seen a bad review of the series yet, and more Nana Haruta can’t be a bad thing. And neither can the seemingly large amount of strawberries used. :3 (I love strawberries~)

Chocolate Cosmos by: Nana Haruta
Why?
I’ve read a few bad reviews of this series, but on the whole most people seem to like it. Plus the plot intrigues me. :]

Yumeiro Patissiere by: Natsumi Matsumoto
Why?
I love the anime and think it would do great here because of the anime and because Matsumoto’s St. Dragon Girl is already out here. And again, more strawberries, yes please!

St. Dragon Girl Miracle by: Natsumi Matsumoto
Why?
I adore St. Dragon Girl and would love to see the sequel officially translated as well!

HOME by: Rinko Ueda
Why?
Because the idea of a samurai randomly getting stuck in Spain amuses me. :] And because it’s Rinko Ueda and is only 2 volumes.

Ryou by: Rinko Ueda
Why?
Again, it’s Rinko Ueda, plus it’s a Fushigi Yugi-type story from what I’ve heard, so it would probably do fairly well here. Also, it’s been republished by Shueisha in a new omnibus format, and I’d really like to see Viz pick up some omnibus format manga for the US, and not just re-releasing manga in the VIZBIG format (though I do LOVE the VIZBIG volumes dearly).

Hot Milk by: Ayumi Komura
Why?
More Ayumi Komura, and it’s just a one-shot. Plus the cover looks adorable.

Usotsuki Lily by: Ayumi Komura
Why?
Komura’s Mixed Vegetables is lots of fun and her art is clean, so her latest series is a definite want for me. Plus, cute boy looks like girl scenario? Do. Want.

Jousama no Tamago (Queen’s Egg) by: Ayumi Komura
Why?
Again, I really like Mixed Vegetables, so would love to see more of her work licensed, plus it’s just a one-shot.

Hybrid Berry by: Ayumi Komura
Why?
This is the one Ayumi Komura work I’d heard of before Mixed Vegetables was licensed, and it’s her only other completed multi-volume series, so I’d really like to see it licensed.

Ai no Tame Ni by: Kazune Kawahara
Why?
Because Kazune Kawahara’s High School Debut is fantastic and this oneshot volume looks good too.

Aozora Yell by: Kazune Kawahara
Why?
Again, Kawahara is great from what I’ve read of her works and this one deals with a girl in band so I totally connect (though I play clarinet and not trumpet). :]

Akuma to Love Song by: Miyoshi Tomori
Why?
Because every time I go to the Margaret site I see the images from this series and really like them. That and right now, my hair cut is basically the same at the main characters, haha. xD

Rose of Versailles by: Riyoko Ikeda
Why?
Because it’s classic and I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t want it licensed.

Yomogi Mochi Yaketa? by: Kiyoko Arai
Why?
Arai’s Beauty Pop is fantastic, and I’d love to see something else by her licensed.

Sailor Moon by: Naoko Taekuchi
Why?
Who doesn’t want this to be rescued? I would absolutely buy a new version of this. My poor copies are falling apart (not to mention I couldn’t get them all before they went out of print).

Watashi ni XX Shinasai! by: Ema Toyama
Why?
Despite the name that makes you think of a porno, this series is actually lots of fun (and not in a dirty way, though admittedly the covers may make you think otherwise) and I’d love to be able to buy it in English.

AAA by: Haruka Fukushima
Why
? I actually like Haruka Fukushima, so would like to see this series come over.

Million Girl by: Kotori Momoyuki
Why?
Because the cover of the first volume is gorgeous and the story sounds incredibly interesting.

Hanasakeru Seishounen by: Natsumi Itsuki
Why?
The anime is such fun, with political intrigue along with romance. The only problem with this series is that it’s a little bit older, but I would absolutely buy it and I think the anime on Crunchyroll would help sales.

Excellent choices, I especially second Yumeiro Patissiere and Ryou! It’s a shame some of these haven’t been picked up already, but I have a feeling a couple of them will get picked up in the future. Arina Tanemura’s titles are fairly popular and a couple more authors have become well known thanks to Shojo Beat.

      haha, thanks! :D
It really is a shame that most of these haven’t been picked up yet, but I’m hoping that a lot of them will be announced in the near future (like this coming con season, haha). I love that Shojo Beat has brought over so many fantastic artists and that they’re becoming more well known. :]

MOMO: Hell yeah. It is an adorable series, and I like how it concentrates on friendship as much as anything else.

Mistress Fortune: Again, totally agree. I’m honestly surprised that Viz hasn’t yet. SHK might be better in full volume dozes.

Stardust Wink and love berrish sound cute too. I’m not fond of teacher-student relationships, but the first few chapters of Chocolate Chomos were cute.

    Yumeiro Patissiere: another hell yeah.

HOME: I loved this series too. I mainly read it because the cover made me lol (character designs reminded me of hetalia) and I was on a high from rereading Tsuki No Shippo. Ryou sounds cool too and yes more offical ombius viz.

Hot Milk: That cover is totally adorable!

More Kazune Kawahara series are needed.

Rose of Versailles: word. It inspired so many other series and it seems awesome and feminist.

Sailor Moon: any rescue we can get is good. I’d really like a manga rescue though as I sadly don’t own a copy.

Watashi ni XX Shinasai!: need to get caught up with this one. Too bad Del ray will probably get considering their situation.

Now I want to write my own list of liences I want.

    • March 25, 2010 6:26 pm

MisuFo: I’m really, really surprised they haven’t licensed this one too…I mean, I understand them not having licensed SHK yet because it is still running, but it’s weird that they haven’t gotten MisuFo.

YumePati: I still can’t believe no one has picked up YumePati to scanlate. I mean, I would prefer a legit version hands down, but it’s weird to me that no one has started scanlating it since the anime started…

HOME: The cover makes me lol too! xD But it looks like such fun and since it’s a period work, you know Ueda has to shine. :D

Hot Milk: I know, right? I saw it and was, “want this. now!” xD

Rose of Versailles: I know! I mean, it is older so I guess I understand why no one has license it yet, but it really, really needs to be licensed! Maybe if Itazura na Kiss continues to do well for DMP they’ll consider it? *hopes*

Sailor Moon: I always want to kick myself when I think about how I didn’t get the whole thing when I had the chance. D: I would love for anyone to rescue it. Maybe Kondansha’s new American branch could release it.

xxShina: I need to catch on it too, haha. I only read the first few chapters. I’m kind of holding out for a license…though if Del Rey does get it, who knows when it will come out (since they keep pushing their releases back again and again).

Do it! :D I’d love to see which series you’d like licensed~

PS, where’s you icon from? Cuz it’s adorable!! :D

rov was licensed in America a long time ago, but I want a new release.

It’s from Mishounen Produce. I highly recommend it.

        My list is up! ^__^

        • March 25, 2010 7:47 pm

Woah, how did I not know that?? D: But yeah, a rescue would be fantastic.

Ooh, I’ll definitely have to check it out! :D

yay~ Off to check it out. :]

Lol. This is the stuff I don’t want to see licensed. = 7 =

  4. March 25, 2010 10:42 pm

Mistress Fortune, YESYESYES. How long are they going to keep us waiting since SDC is practically finished now? T___T

    And I’m despairing on how Million Girl will probably never even reach the states…which is why I should just build myself a publishing company and take up whatever series I want to take up but I’m broke. xD;

    • March 25, 2010 11:22 pm

I don’t know! D: SDC literally ends next month and I’d like to know when we’re getting MisuFo by then, but the chances of that are not very good. :[

I would totally back you…if I had the money. xD But I really hope that someone picks up Million Girl cuz it looks awesome, and the art’s just to die for.

  5. March 26, 2010 10:18 pm

I don’t know too many of those titles but I like the cuteness of Momo
Jousama no Tamago looks sort of bad ass for some reason ^^; but something I’d like to try.
Watashi ni XX Shinasai! definitely! 8D I’m hoping Del Rey will grab this (though I’m kind of worried since some of their other licenses are taking a while to be released *looks at Psycho Busters and Yozakura Quartet*)
Million Girl is another one I’d love (the cover art is nice *I’m sadly the type who likes to judge based on a cover 89% of the time*).
And who DOESN’T want Sailor Moon!? Heck yeah to that! 8D

    • March 26, 2010 10:26 pm

Oh, I know, Momo is just adorable~
You should see the whole cover for Jousama no Tamago (here), it makes it look even more badass.
I know…Del Rey has me worried, they have a few of my more liked series and I don’t like the way they’ve started treating them…and they’ve really got to work on the whole time frame thing.
(I totally judge things by the cover, like all the time)
      TRUE THAT! :D

      • March 28, 2010 11:30 pm

Whoa snap, Jousama no Tamago cover! Isn’t that the one where the main girl comes from a country into S&M? (the red candle sparked the memory in my head) I think I remember seeing this on mangafox!
(If I’m wrong, I’m going to have a hard time explaining where that S&M part came from…)

I hope they don’t pull a Tokyopop 8,< (though granted, Tokyopop is slowly bringing their stuff back…just not my fail titles haha…sigh)
I'm hoping an Omnibus form will be announced in the near future for those series I'm collecting (it may look weird on my shelf but at least it's there to look weird!)
Yeah, I have a hard time trying to figure out Del Rey's release schedule for their products (their website – last I checked – had an OLD set of release dates; I pretty much just rely on rightstuf to tell me everything ^^;)

        • March 29, 2010 12:05 am

It doesn’t look like it’s on mangafox (I’m not sure it’s scanlated, I just think it looks interesting, haha).
(hahaha, it definitely looks like something that would relate to S&M anyway)

I really hope so too!! D: It’s looking like Del Rey is going to omnibus format for a lot of their series, so hopefully that works better for them. (I love omnibi (?), but not in the middle of a series…). And yeah, Del Rey has a crappy website. It’s better than Tokyopop’s site (oh my God is it horrible to navigate), but it’s still not good. I usually rely on amazon or rightstuf for release dates, cuz half the time sites don’t get updated, which is annoying. :/

Luckily for me, most of the stuff I buy now is from Viz and they have never (that I’ve ever encountered) stopped a series in the middle or randomly jumped to omnibus versions. They have pushed back release dates, but the most I’ve seen has been like 2 months, and it’s usually just one.

  6. March 29, 2010 9:20 am

License only when they finish scanlating please :D

Most scanlators stop once a series get licensed and frankly, scanlation team speeds is faster than the official companies. Feels like half the times a series gets licensed I have to drop the manga for like a year while they catch up <.<

    • March 29, 2010 11:38 am

I completely understand what you mean (gosh waiting for the legit version of manga can be hard!! D: ), but I’d take it being licensed over waiting for scanlations any day. :]

After reading this entry, I went straight to read Love Berrish,
it was great! But it ending like 4 years old but they only have translations up to chapter 10 :(
It was confusing reading the raws, but it was a nice ending :)
btw, is it the strawberry dorm or Raseberry dorm?

    • April 5, 2010 8:57 pm

“But it ending like 4 years old but they only have translations up to chapter 10 :(”
Definitely one of the reasons I want it licensed~ I like getting releases on a specific schedule (and paying for and actually holding the book, haha).

I’m pretty sure it’s the Strawberry Dorm, but for some reason wikipedia says Raspberry.

  8. July 5, 2010 9:30 am

There’s a rumor that someone got the license for Sailor Moon.

Sakura Hime Kaden, too, was licensed. YAAY! :D

    • July 5, 2010 11:34 am

I’ve heard the rumors about Sailor Moon…I really hope they’re true and if so, that it’s for the new version~ :D

And I am soooo excited that SHK was licensed, and also MisuFo. :]
