my ramblings: This novel is fantastic. Ok, so it’s not technically a novel, it’s a blog that’s been published in book form, but that doesn’t make it any less awesome. I can’t tell you the number of times I laughed out loud! I sped through the book in about two hours (since it really is nothing but short blog posts). The author, Pentabu, has an exceedingly hilarious writing style, that gives you a definite feel for what he was really feeling at the time. I think my favorite were the times he freaked out about the shojo manga (Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden to be exact!) left in his apartment and the time his girlfriend ordered a number of eroge to be delivered to his apartment because it was too embarrassing for them to be delivered to her apartment.
The pure number of anime references in this book is actually a bit astounding. And the number of those that I understood made me feel more and more like a fujoshi myself! (In the non-BL use of the word.) Yen included a note and glossary section in the back of the book that was useful for the extremely obscure references (and for those, like a brand of mothballs mentioned). The only problem I had with this was that it wasn’t done by page number of the reference, but alphabetically. It was still extremely useful, but it would have been more so if the notes and references were in order by the way they were mentioned in the book.
Yen uses a bunch of different fonts and bolding for emphasis and the like, which I’m assuming was in the original, and is a fun and easy way to get major points across. They also included a color page in the front, which was nice, but actually rather useless, as it was just a slightly different version of the front cover and there was nothing on the backside of the page. I didn’t notice any grammatical or spelling errors, so serious props to Yen Press for that.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite of the Yen Press light novel series; it’s a shame there’s only one more volume! I suggest this to anyone who likes a good laugh over anime references or for someone looking for a short and extremely light read. It’s extremely well done and extremely hilarious!
